Hardcover. 31cm, second edition corrected,(viii),699,[16]p., addenda, index, in full contemporary calf, gilt ruledreal raised bands, gilt ruled boarders on the boards, new paper label, avery good internally fine copy. (cgc) Quaker historian, William Sewel(1654-1720) first published the "History" in Dutch in Amsterdam after 25years of preparation. Born in Holland, Sewel's grandparent's having fledthere from England to escape religious persecution, the English translationis remarkable considering Sewel had only spent ten months in England. First published in English in 1722, the book is dedicated to King GeorgeI from "Thy Affectionate and Sincere Well-Wisher". It remained a classicalauthority for many years and was still in print in New York in1844.
