About This Item

London: Jacob Tonson, 1725. (20), 271 pages, followed by 8 leaves containing the appendix, index and booksellers' catalog. Written by British historian and clergyman Laurence Echard (1670-1730), this is an early history of England's "Glorious Revolution" beginning with a review of problems during the reigns of King Charles and King James II and concluding with the Declaration of Rights" (the full text of the Declaration is on pages 265-268) and the accession of King William II and Queen Mary II. The appendix contains a calendar of the Convention and a record of the presence/absence of each peer at every session as well as their recorded dissents. The bookseller catalog lists books for sale by Tim. Hatchett and Edm. Comins in the Royal Exchange. Jacob Tonson (1655-1736) and his nephew Jacob Tonson (1682-1735) were among the most significant London booksellers and publishers at the end of the 17th century and beginning of the 18th century. Among their accomplishments were the publication of important editions of Shakespeare, Dryden, and Milton During the last decade, the book was sympathetically rebound in full brown leather with the original title patch retained on the spine; it is in near-fine rebound condition: clean and tight, with supple pages that are minimally toned; some relatively minor foxing that is limited to the index and catalogue. Some previous owner has neatly excised a name from the top edge of the second blank leaf.. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.
