About This Item
London : Chiswick Press, 1812. Leather. Very Good. 6" by 3.5". None. A beautiful leather bound pocket size edition of Samuel Johnson's earliest work. An 1812 edition of Samuel Johnson's The Prince of Abissinia in a straight grain morocco binding. Originally published in 1759; this edition is from 1812. Philosophically important, this work questions and explores themes surrounding entitlement. Johnson explores the conquest, exploration and wealth which go on to influence his abolitionist views. Johnson was inspired by Milton's Paradise Lost. He uses similar ideas of journey to understand and explores themes of human purpose. Truth is central to the overall message. Bound in a straight grain morocco binding. Externally very smart with slight rubbing to boards. Internally generally firmly bound, with page 12 working loose, otherwise tight. Minor age toning throughout. Pencil marks to back blank. Gift inscription to front blank and title page. Very Good
