About This Item

New York: Farrar, Straus, Giroux, 1973. Very good (some foxing on page edges and binding edges, light edgewear at top and bottom of spine) in good only dust jacket (unfortunate worn spot on spine as if something had been stuck to it and pulled off--see photo). Lowell's rewriting of "Notebook" with about 80 new poems, including an almost-apologetic note regarding the need for the rewriting: i.e., writer's remorse. But there is wonder here in Lowell's free sonnets, "I must either be Christian or non-violent; / past history is immobile in our committed hands, / till Death drops his white marble scythe--Brother, / one skeleton among our skeletons." History from Abel to Anne Boleyn to Robert Kennedy to "Red and Black Brick Boston" in the winter. 207 pages.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover.
