About This Item
London: John Murray, 1828. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 8" by 6". None. A handsomely bound four volume set of this fictionalised account of the life of Christopher Columbus. The first edition of the work. Complete in four volumes, with a folding map to volumes one and two. Half titles present to all volumes. With a bookplate to front pastedown of all volumes stating 'Purchased out of the legacy of Edward Phillips MA of Magdalene Hall to That Society MDCCCLV'. With withdrawn stamp and private library location to label also. A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus is a fictional account of the life of Christopher Columbus, and is considered one of the first examples of American historical fiction. The work was one of many attempts at nationalistic myth making by poets and authors of the time, and is an early example to perpetuate the flat earth story. In full calf bindings. Externally very smart with slight rubbing to the extremities. Marks and the odd spot to the boards. Bookplates and withdrawn stamp to front pastedown of all volumes. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with the odd spot, heavier to the first and last few pages. Very Good
