Good/As New. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 194pp. Blind stamped boards, gilt stamped floral border, gilt stamping and gilt lettering to spine, all edges gilt, 7 engraved plates with tissue-guards, signed on editor's page "Maria G. Haro." Edge worn, spine chipped with minor loss, endpapers stained, very occasional foxing to text.

First House edition of this famous report. 1845. Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Two three-quarter leather hardcovers with marbled boards and calf leather; 349k pages total plus publisher's adverts. Good plus condition: moderate wear to leather; one of the spine labels on vol. II is missing and the other is chipped; both are straight and tight; a handful of pages with minor soiling; most pages in excellent condition; inner front hinge of volume I cracked at title page but it is holding very well..

Questionable, a first tourist guide - In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries it was fashionable to take a boat tour down the Wye Valley, to view its romantic sites and picturesque landscape. 'Tourists' dined at specific locations, took walks to particular viewpoints and visited specific romantic ruins, making the 'Wye Tour' one of the first package holidays. In 1768 Gilpin published a popular Essay on Prints, where he defined the picturesque as "that kind of beauty which is agreeable in a picture" and began to expound his "principles of picturesque beauty", based largely on his knowledge of landscape painting. During the late 1760s and 1770s, Gilpin travelled extensively in the summer holidays and applied his principles to the landscapes he saw, committing his thoughts and spontaneous sketches to notebooks.
