About This Item
Edinburgh; (2000, 2004, 2004 and 1997): T. And T. Clark. Octavo. The original four volumes issued at the end of the 19th Century were still useful but badly outdated since archaeological, historical, and manuscript discoveries were buried in specialized scholarly books. Geza Vermes has incorporated all this as well as the Dead Sea Scrolls information, Matthew Black incorporated all the latest in New Testament manuscript studies. The enormous scholarship on the Greek-speaking Jews who wrote the New Testament can now be traced back to the period of the first century A.D. though our earliest New Testament papyri are just before the mid-2nd Century A.D. In Volume III, part two (which concludes the series), there is a very significant article on Philo. We can fix one point in his life which coincides with the reign of Caligula (39-40 A.D.). The in-depth study on Quirinius shows the latest study which relates it in terms of Luke 2. The scholarship in this marvelous, updated version will be essential for any serious student or scholar who wishes to understand the New Testament in its fullest historical background. Three volumes in four bound in brown cloth, the last volume is in blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. A fine bright set-in fine dust jackets.
