About This Item
Jefferson County, site of Georgia's first permanent capital at Louisville, is the subject of this short history written in 1927 by Mrs. Z.V. Thomas. Jefferson was formed in 1796 from Burke and Warren Counties. The book gives a brief, textual account of the colonization of Georgia, the early days and early settlers of Jefferson County, and general accounts of schools, churches, newspapers, railroads, business and industry, and the Yazoo land fraud. Also included are brief historical sketches of the following towns in Jefferson County: Louisville, Wadley, Bartow, Moxley, Stapleton, Stellaville, Matthews, Avera, Wrens, Zebina, and Bethany. Chapters deal with Jefferson County in the Civil War and in World War I. Civil War companies mentioned are the Jefferson County Guards, Jeff Grays, Battey Guards, Jefferson Volunteers, and Grubbs Hussars. An every-name index, compiled for this edition, has been added to the book and ten illustrations depict various aspects of Jefferson's history.
