About This Item
This history tells the story of Irwin County, an original Georgia county created in 1818 from Creek Indian lands. From it eventually came all of parts of twenty-two counties (Worth, Wilcox, Turner, Ben Hill, Tift, Colquitt, Thomas, Cook, Brooks, Berrien, Lowndes, Echols, Clinch, Lanier, Atkinson, Coffee, Ware, Charlton, Jeff Davis, Bacon, Pierce, and Brantley). The initial organization of the county is outlined, with lists of early courts and officers. Muster rolls of Confederate units and lists of World War I veterans are included. There is a listing of approximately 4500 marriages from 1835 to 1930. Brief genealogical sketches of the following pioneer families are included: Harper, McMillan, Whitley, Henderson, Whiddon, Dorminy, Clements, Fletcher, Alexander, Hobby, Branch, Ross, Chandler, Tucker, Purvis, Story, Roberts, McInnis, Gray, Royal, Statum, Fuller, Young, Wilcox, Ried, Tomberlin, Spring, Sumner, Warren, Paulk, Luke, Vickers, Bowen, Turner, Dixon, Hogan, Mixon, Hunter, Taylor, Gibbs, McCall, Haman, and McCrimmon.
