First published between 1834 and 1836, this is a fascinating and exhaustive guide to the Highlands, its people and its history from the invasion of Agricola.Written by James Browne (1793-1841), a man of letters whose other work included sub-editing the Caledonian Mercury and the seventh edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica.In four volumes. Illustrated with woodcuts and engravings. Volume I contains three plates, but is lacking the folding map, with a recent replacement loosely inserted. Volume II contains six plates, volume III nine, and volume IV with forty-seven. Complete with all plates bar the folding map.A new edition. In a half calf binding. Externally a trifle worn; spines are rubbed to the head and tail, with the head of the spine of Volume I worn in particular. There are marks to the boards. Volume I has family dates inscribed to the front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are a little spotted, but otherwise bright. Good Only
