About This Item

Philadelphia; Chicago,; St.Louis; Dayton: National Publishing Company, 1877. Edward Winslow Martin was the pen-name of James Dabney McCabe (1842-1883), a prolific author of popular histories who seems to have specialized in the topics of vice and financial scandal, of which there were plenty. A graduate of VMI, he was pro-South in his Civil War writings, but Quercus has found no evidence of military service. Here is a major work concerning the labor strife and looming radicalism in America at the time, which from the Martin viewpoint was a "reign of terror." The last section deals with the Molly Maguires. A Very Good copy of the First Edition. Decorative blue cloth binding, blindstamped, filled in black and gilt. Profusely illustrated with "drawings made on the spot," many of which fold out. Clean text; 516 pages, with 10 pages of publisher's adverts in the rear (including a job offer). Pages are supple, light toning throughout. Rubbed at the margins and a bit shaken =; the first endpaper has been reinforced with filmoplast [Note: due to a computer crash, this book may also appear as Inventory # 002395]. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Very Good (Minus)/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
