About This Item

London: A. Millar, 1758. First edition. Leather. Very Good. 8.5" by 5.5". None. The first edition, second issue of Jonathan Swift's posthumously published - and controversial - history of the final years of the reign of Queen Anne. With leaves Z3 and 2A3 correctly signed, identifying this as the first edition, second issue.'Published from the Last Manuscript Copy, Corrected and Enlarged by the Author's Own Hand', this is Jonathan Swift's posthumously published historical account of the final four years of the reign of Queen Anne.First written in 1713, and revised several times throughout the course of Swift's life, with publication of the work blocked in both 1727 and 1737, as it was known that Anne had never liked Swift. A friend was entrusted with the manuscript copy and was ultimately able to publish the work in 1758, thirteen years after Swift's death, though not without some controversy. With a bookplate identifying the 'Works of Jon: Swift' to the front pastedown, signed J. Grant.ESTC reference no. T143996 An excellent copy of this late work from the popular Anglo-Irish satirist and author, best remembered for 1726's 'Gulliver's Travels'. In a half calf binding, with original paper covered boards restored. Externally, very smart. Rebacked, with endpapers renewed. Front hinge starting following leaf A3, with board holding firm. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned to perimeters, with areas of spotting throughout. Very Good
