About This Item

Newton Abbot, UK: David & Charles, 1967. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Facsimile reprint of the two volume 1851 first edition published in London. This was the first comprehensive non-specialist study of the English railway system. The author tells how the system came to be planned and developed, with descriptions of the main lines and biographical notes on their builders. He deals with the tiresome questions of gauge, Sunday travel, the treatment of third-class passengers, etc. An excellent tool for comparison of railroad development in North America. 590 pages. Fine in fine dust jacket with two small darkened spots from removal of possible price stickers.
