About This Item
New York: Samuel Stansbury and Co, 1805. Poor condition but with important folding map in good to very good condition. First American edition, part of a 25 volume series of Universal History. First published in English, the text shows a distinctive British attitude towards the United States shortly after the Revolution. This volume is devoted to the known portions of the Western Hemistphere and features a large folding map titled America (approximately 17.5 x 13 inches, engraved by Scoles and printed by Reynolds. The map features the eastern United States and Canada and identifies states and territories, cities, settlements and forts, and Native American tribes. It also includes the short-lived areas known as Morgania located west of the Mississippi river and Franklinia in eastern Tennasee [Tennesee]. The map is age-toned and has a three inch closed tear extending from the binding stub and an inch closed tear along one fold line, a couple of pinholes at intersecting folds. The book itself is fair to poor with front cover detached, rear cover nearly so, leather dried and chipped, map and rear endpaper detached, large chip to front free endpaper, text block sound, pages age-toned but clean with a couple of pages lightly spotted, a couple of very minor margin holes that seem to be a paper flaw, no names or other markings.. First US Edition. Hard Cover. Poor. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
