About This Item
Philadelphia : J. B. Lippincott Company , 1873. Leather. Very Good. 7.5" by 5" . None . William H. Prescott's history of Mexican conquest, a later edition complete in three volumes. Originally published in 1843, Prescott started drafting this history in 1839, relying almost exclusively on primary sources due to the little general knowledge of Aztec civilisation. In particular, he studies Spanish writers contemporary to the conquest, such as Torquemada and Toribio de Benavente. The work was both a critical and commercial success, with much praise by the likes of George Hillard and Joseph Cogswell. Complete in three volumes with half titles. Featuring frontispiece to each volume. William H. Prescott was a prominent American historian in the nineteenth century, recognised as the first American scientific historian and noted for his eidetic memory. Rebound in uniform half crushed morocco bindings over marbled boards, marbled endpapers, gilt to top edge. Externally sound with shelf wear, minor rubbing to joints Internally, firmly bound. Spotting to frontispiece, otherwise pages bright and clean. Very Good
