A. S. Barnes and Co., 1896-01-01. Hardcover. Acceptable. . Volume 1 only. Missing the spine, top board detached, cover shows heavy wear, tear, rubbing, and fading. Pages are lightly tanned, some shaken.

New York: A. S. Barnes Company, 1896. Three volumes. Red cloth, gilt on top edges. A very good set, the spine labels are a bit rubbed, the spines somewhat sunned, spine ends are somewhat frayed or rubbed and the corners of the covers are rubbed. No dust jackets. Interiors are clean and tight throughout. Illustrated with index. Martha J. Lamb (1829-1893) was an author, editor and historian. She moved to New York City, where, in 1883 she purchased The Magazine of American History and became its editor. She was elected to membership in fifteen historical and learned societies in the United States and Europe. Constance Cary Harrison (1843-1920) was originally a southerner (her husband was a private secretary to Jefferson Davis) who moved to New York in 1866. Among many other accomplishments she persuaded her friend Emma Lazarus to donate a poem to the fundraising effort to pay for a pedestal for the Statue of Liberty.. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Complete in three (3) volumes, uniformly bound in light rust decorated cloth, lettered in gilt, beveled edges, deckled text block edges with top edges in gilt. Nicely preserved set. All 3 volumes show only minor shelf wear, minor rubbing to extremities and minor soiling to cloth, spine panel cloth a bit darkened by age. Firm bindings, Vol. II hinges mended. Interiors show foxing to several early and late leaves and flyleaves, otherwise light scattered foxing. xiv,11-570 + xii,571-771,11-350, + xii,351-920 pp., illus., 42 engraved plates, 16 maps..
