Slight wear to extremities (chiefly lower edges and corners; heads/feet of spines); lacks 1 spine label (volume 1); ex-library markings (chiefly to front free endpapers); slight internal browning and/or foxing (chiefly to preliminaries and endpapers). xxiv, [2], 576; viii, 646 pages + plates. Notable historical set; particularly for the 2 engraved frontispieces (portraits of Tregonwell Frampton 'Father of the Turf' and of Queen Victoria at Ascot). Includes 2 appendixes, plus bibliographical references. BMC, volume 27, page 4, column 59. 2 volumes complete; bound in 3/4 dark green calf over maroon cockerell boards, spines faded to brown, gilt- and blindstamped, with raised bands and gilt-stamped dark red morocco spine labels, maroon marbled edges, plain endpapers, all edges trimmed. Provenance: From the library of Baron Dickinson Webster, with his engraved card and armorial bookplate on front attached endpapers of both volumes. Rare in any condition; in supplied clear protective mylar jackets.10 Engraved Illustrations (including frontispieces).
