Hardcover. 8vo. 21cm, first edition, in 3 volumes,xxxii,525 & 669 & 528pp., with 520 engraved text illustrat-ions, incontemporary full decorated diced calf, raised gilt-ruled bands, gilttitles on morocco labels, gilt decorated in the panel, gilt ruled borderson the diced calf boards, marbled endpapers & edges, spine edges rubbed,light foxing primarily to endpapers, some wear on the board edges andsome occasion worming on the boards, sound, a very good set. (sgc) Freeman 4176. The first book edition of an important 19th centuryornithological study, first appearing in parts from 1837 to 1843, byBritish naturalist, William Yarrell (1784-1856). It remained a standardreference for birds for the rest of the century and was known to havebeen used by Yarrell's colleague, Audubon. The illustrations were drawnby Alexander Fussell and engraved by John Thompson and sons.
