London: John Van Voorst Revised and enlarged fourth edition published between 1871-74. Vols 1 and II revised by Alfred Newton, Vols III and IV by Howard Saunders. Complete four-volume set with 564 wood engravings. Navy-blue covers with gilt, blind-stamped rules to upper and lower boards, rough-cut edges, black endpapers. Vol 1: 646pp; Vol II; 494pp; Vol III: 684pp; Vol IV: 531pp inc index. Vol I has a comprehensive list of British birds (29x45cm) slipped in and a gift inscription on ffep. Vol III has an article from an 1891 edition of "The Naturalis" slipped in. All four volumes are in similar condition with lightly sunned spines, dusty page edges, mild foxing to prelims and very occasional pencilled marginalia.
