Washington DC: Government Printing Office, 1876. First Edition / Presentation Edition. Cloth. Near fine. Presentation edition of the Historical Sketch of the United States Naval Academy by Professor James Russell Soley, published in 1876.. Large octavo, 348pp. Rebound in light blue cloth, title in gilt on spine. New endpapers. Marbled edges. Previous ownership inscription on front flyleaf. Complete with twenty five full-page mounted photographs, all with tissue guards and captions, including frontispiece and a folded map of the Naval Academy. (Sabin 86382) Signed on the verso of frontispiece by Professor C. F. Blauvelt, instructor of draftsmanship at the Naval Academy. A scarce presentation edition from the Government Printing Office. This work was published to coincide with the 1876 Centennial Exhibition, but the trade edition was published without the twenty-five photographs. Neither Neeser nor Harbeck acknowledge this large paper copy. OCLC records only two copies. The photographs include a frontis of the Grounds from the Bandstand, the Department of Steam Engineering, a Dress-Parade, the Department of Gunnery, the Model Room of the Department of Seamanship and the New Cadets' Quarters.
