London: Printed for T. Payne and Son [et al], 1790. 3 vols., 8vo, pp. [iv], xxxix, [i], 512; xxxii, 492; xxx, 308, vi, 71, [47] + engraved dedication leaf in vol. 1. Near-contemporary tree calf, red morocco labels, spines tooled in gilt, edges yellow. Just a touch of spotting. Somewhat rubbed and worn, joints cracked, label to vol. 1 lost. Armorial bookplates of Cranstoun of Corehouse to pastedowns. The first edition of the first English translation of the major work of J.S. Pütter (1725-1807), long-serving professor of law at Göttingen. The translator, Josiah Dornford (1762-1797), was an Oxford graduate who took his LLD at Göttingen, though he was also called to the bar at Lincoln’s Inn. This copy belonged to George Cranstoun, Lord Corehouse (1770-1850), advocate and judge, close friend of Walter Scott and esteemed by Lord Monboddo as the ‘only scholar in all Scotland.’ ESTC T144586.
