This double theme issue looks at the Frances Benjamin Johnston photographs of historic Tennessee Valley buildings taken for the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South in the Spring of 1939. Johnston photographed sixteen sites in the area, all of which are discussed, with some of the sixty-five photographs she took complementing the text.
