Very important work for the study of the ways in which the Bible was publicised during the 18th century in Portugal. The first edition was published in 1742 in a single volume in folio. It was followed by editions in 1745, 1752, 1758 (the first in quarto), 1769, 1770 and 1781. From the next edition in 1786, the work was published in two volumes in the format of the octavo, which it kept in the following editions of 1792 in Coimbra and Lisbon, 1809, 1817, 1819 and 1830.

Royaumont, according to the BNF (French National Library), is the pseudonym of Nicolas Fontaine (1625-1709), who had the collaboration of Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy (1613-1684) in the production of this work.

Nicolas Fontaine, born in Paris in 1625 and died in Melun on 28 January 1709. French writer and theologian. His entry into Port-Royal decided the fate of his life. He worked there in various capacities, namely as secretary to Antoine Arnauld, whose escape he accompanied when Arnauld was expelled from the Sorbonne in 1656. He also shared the exile of Nicole, Sacy and Singlin. In 1664, he was arrested as a Jansenist, together with Lemaistre de Sacy, and was imprisoned with him in the Bastille until 1669. At the end of his days, he retired to Melun, where he died at the age of 84 on 28 January 1709.

Louis-Isaac Lemaistre de Sacy (29 March 1613 - 4 January 1684), priest of Port-Royal, was a French theologian and humanist. He is best known for his translation of the Bible, the most widespread French Bible in the 18th century, also known as the Bible of Port-Royal.

Luís Paulino da Silva e Azevedo (Porto, 1690 - 1755), was a Knight of the Order of Christ and Secretary of the Bureau of the Disembargo do Paço. The Padrão do Senhor Roubado, in Odivelas, was built, with his authorisation, on a property that belonged to him. The writer Pedro Norberto de Aucourt e Padilha married his only daughter.

About Livraria Castro e SIlva

Founded in 1957, by Ezequiel Castro e Silva, LIVRARIA CASTRO E SILVA is a bibliographic commercial organization, well known in the antique book market and amongst the antiquarian booksellers, both in Portugal and abroad, for being one of the most distinguished Portuguese specialists in its area, dealing in books through several continents. We seek to maintain a family tradition that goes back to the second decade of the last century. Our main activity is the edition and periodic publication of bibliographic catalogues.

Aiming to provide faster access to our catalogues, better stock information and improving communication with our clients, in 2003 we launched our website www.castroesilva.com, allowing all interested parts an easier access to registration and order of our catalogues. This webpage has a bibliographical database which seeks to replace the old file system, in itself an historical and probably unique tool, while allowing us the means to spread information about our books and contributing to the general bibliographical research.

We are convinced that personal contact should always be privileged so all interested parts can visit us at our shop, where those seeking rare, antique books, for collecting or studying can find and examine them in the private quiet environment such activity requires.
