About This Item
1601. Volume I (of II). Alcala de Henares, Vuida de Juán Gracián, 1601. 31,5 : 22 cm. 6 leaves, 565 (wrong 573) pages. Contemporary vellum. First edition of this very important book, without a doubt one of the best and most extensive primitive chronicles of Japan and its missions. Splendid copy that also includes chronicles of the missions in China, the Philippines, Goa and Brazil. The merit of Luis de Guzmán (1544-1605) lay in the fact that he knew how to take advantage of the publications already made and the oral testimonies of his fellow Jesuits to compose this history and compile the numerous relations, stories and news that were found scattered in a multitude of small prints, like the letters about the missions in Japan that the missionaries established there and were wrote annually. The first volume here present, deals entirely with the Missions in Japan from 1565 to 1600, including India, China, Brasil, Philippins, Goa, the Persia Golf . "It contains interesting passages related to the Philippines, especially the one that deals with Father Alonso Sánchez" (Retana) First part: I: Description of Eastern India and relationship of the life and travels of Saint Francis Xavier. Philippine Islands. II: From the Island of Goa, Island of Salsete, Costa de Pesquería, Kingdom of Ceylon, Kingdom of Cabaya (Cambodia), of the Kings of Maluco, Moro Islands and other islands. III: Of the Island and city of Hormuz, Kingdom of Manomotapa, Kingdom of Ethiopia, Goa, Court of Great Mogor. From Brazil [pp. 272 to 308]. IV: China. Geographic, physical and historical description. History of the missions. V: Japan. Geographic, physical and historical description. VI: Japan. History of the Missions from 1540 to 1565. Important work for the history of Japan and the missions in Asia. Invoice. Contemporary vellum. First edition of this highly steemed work, beginning with an account of the life of St. Francis Xavier, and giving a history of the Jesuit Missions from 1540 to 1600 to India, China, the Philippines, and especially Japan. Also including a 40-page account of the Missions in Brazil. "Guzman's important history of the Jesuit activities in Asia. The Spanish Jesuit records on which Guzman largely based his work are now lost" . - Signatures: [par.]6 A-Ll8 Mm4 Nn8 (R2, Nn2 missigned R3, Nn3; Nn8 blank). - With an erased stamp on the title-page which proceeds from a private collection or a Monastery, not from a public library. During the so called 'Desamortizacion de Mendizabal' many things - books, paintings, furniture - came on the market again - see attached explanation.
