Hardcover. See Description. Small 12mo. Two books bound together. Full contemporary vellum. 1.) J-C. Scoti, Monarchia solipsorum. Second Edition. pp. 158, [4]. First printed in Venice, 1645. This second edition was printed by Elzevier. Pages are generally clean. A bibliographical note (listing several references) and an old ownership inscription - "ex bibliotheca Kripperdorfia" - are written in old hand on the front blank. The Monarchia solipsorum is bitter satire written against the Jesuits which, in its day, caused quite a sensation. The author describes a secret society of "Solipsen" (those who wish to govern entirely) understood to mean the Jesuits. The supposed laws, secret instructions and clandestine operations of the organization are discussed. The author's name is given as Lucius Cornelius Europaeus which is a pseudonym. Authorship is usually attributed to an ex-Jesuit named Jules Clement Scoti. Some, however, believe Melchior Inchofer (who's name appeared on a… Read More

Description:
Amsterdam: Abraham Wolfgang, 1688 A fair copy of the first French edition of Richard Blome's guide to British interests in North America with 6 (of 7) folding maps. The 1st edition was in English and published a year previously. The maps for the French edition were redrawn close copies of those in the English edition, and 4 of the maps in this copy have Robert Morden's name on them. The guide is a nice pocket size and was popular, however, some of the mapping is a little strange - the map of New York is notable in that Manhattan is shown as a peninsula not an island. This copy is missing the map of the Mid-Atlantic States - "Nouvelle Carte de la Pensylvanie Maryland, Virginie et Nouvelle Iarsey". The book is in contemporary full leather which is very worn with cracked hinges and a delaminating spine. The boards are reasonably sound with some leather loss at corners and a small area on the front board. The endpapers are marbled. Contents: 2 blank; title; avertissement 2pp; Text 1-331… Read More

Oxford: Printed by H.H., Printer to the University, for Ric Royston and Ric Davis, 1665. Hardcover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 32mo. Calf. [23] 155 p.p. Bumping to corners. Spine tilted. Wear and scratches to spine. Hinges bound tightly. Note in iron gall ink on leaf facing title page: "this Henry Hammond is thought to be the author of Whole Duty of Man.' The Whole Duty of Man is a Protestant devotional book that was published anonymously, with an introduction by Henry Hammond, though authorship was later attributed to Richard Allestree [1621-1681]. Henry Hammond [1605-1660] was a churchman, preacher, and Royalist sympathizer during the English Civil War. As a theologian, he produced several sermons and religious tracts, and compared texts of the New Testament in his book, "Paraphrase and Annotations Upon all the Books of the New Testament" [1653].

In contemporary unlettered full calf (a little worn with minor loss to board corners, sometime skilfully rebacked in matching leather), five raised spine bands, internally clean with only the lightest of occasional dust staining. Muller was deputy head of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where he was instrumental to its transformation into a disciplined cadet academy. Description:
This small volume contains the potery of Claudius Claudiani, known as Claudian (c. 370-c. 404 AD). A poet of Greek origin who wrote in Latin, he has been considered the last significant poet in the classical tradition and was in particular known for his epigrams praising Romans in significant political positions, as well as his poetry on mythic topics. He was considered a poet of importance in the Middle Ages.
This edition of Claudian's works was published by Daniel Elzevier, a member of the significant Dutch publishing House of Elzevier, in 1677. This is an excellent example of the small editions for which the House of Elzevier was particularly well-known, measuring approximately 2.5 inches wide by 4.5 inches tall, and its contents accord with their focus on classical works as well as editions of the Greek New Testament.
This particularly edition of Claudian's poetry includes a life of Claudian written by Giglio (here identified as Lilio) Gregorious Giraldi (1479-1552) taken from his work on the… Read More
