Paris: Chez Garnier Freres. Very Good-. 1867. Hardcover. (viii), 466 pages; Contents secure in original binding of red leather spine over red cloth covered boardss. Owner's name ffep, otherwise unmarked; scattered foxing throughout; cloth rubbed through at corners, superficial stains to boards. The work is illustrated by Yan' Dargent with a frontispiece engraving, plus 15 full page plates, as well as numerous in text illustrations. A broad ranging study of the life of plants, buds, cell structures, vascular plants, bark, stems, roots, layers and cuttings, grafts, leaves, plant sleep, their nutrition. Jean-Édouard Dargent, known as Yan' Dargent (1824-1899) was a French painter and illustrator. n 1850, he left his job with the railway and moved to Paris determined to make a living from art but independently and not attached to any particular studio/workshop ("atelier") and, alongside Gustave Doré, became known as an accomplished illustrator. His output as an illustrator over the years was prolific. .

At The Antiquarian Book Shop, located in Georgetown - an historic neighborhood of Washington, D.C. we have been buying, selling & appraising rare, interesting and scholarly books in Georgetown for more than 30 years.
