About This Item
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2003. First American Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Fine/fine. Complete set of His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman, signed by the author in each volume. This set includes the first American edition of The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass.. Octavo, [three volumes], 399pp; 326pp; 518pp. All hardcover, Volume I and II with navy cloth spine and title in gilt, Volume III with illustrated boards. Full number with "First Edition" stated on each copyright page. A fine set, all solid text blocks. Touch of wear to bottom edge of Volume I. In the publisher's dust jackets, retail prices intact, fine with vibrant illustrations. Signed by the author on the title page of each book. Scarce seen with signatures in all three volumes. The first book in this trilogy was originally published in the U.K under the title of Northern Lights. Pullman planned to title the series The Golden Compasses as a reference to a line from Milton's Paradise Lost, but eventually swapped it with His Dark Materials. Publishers at Alfred A. Knopf were so attached to the Golden Compasses name that it was used for the American printings, as seen here.
Synopsis
The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials #1), The Subtle Knife (His Dark Materials, #2), and The Amber Spyglass (His Dark Materials, #3) are the three books that make up the controversial and moving trilogy by Philip Pullman.
