About This Item

New York, New York, U.S.A. : Ecco, 2004. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. HIS BROTHER'S KEEPER is a book about the epitome of the new biology: regenerative medicine. It tells the story of the epic line of cell research that is right now coming together with discoveries that take us across the borders of biology into some of its most fascinating and bewildering frontiers, including cloning, genomic, molecular genetics, genetic engineering, and embryonic stem cells. This is a book that explores the moment when life science in the pursuit of medicine achieves the power to direct new steps in the evolution of the human body and spirit. The story is told through the lives of two amazing brothers: Stephen Heywood, a carpenter, who discovers he has A.L.S., a gradual, mysterious deterioration of the nervous system, also known as Lou Gehrig `s disease, and Jamie Heywood, an engineer who quits his lucrative job to start a foundation where he obsessively works with cutting-edge scientists in a race to find a cure. Through this remarkable journey with a family in crisis, we are given an overview of the various gene therapies that are still on the horizon, capable of potentially bringing back those suffering from such neurological diseases as A.L.S., Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and other various disorders of the brain. Through the translucent prose of Jonathan Weiner, we experience not only the passion and torment of the Heywoods, but we learn a vast amount about the groundbreaking technologies that may one day save our own lives and certainly change the way we live them.rJonathan Weiner is also the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of THE BEAK OF THE FINCH. Fine, first edition, first printing, in fine, mylar-protected dust jacket. [Not remainder-marked or price-clipped] BUND

On Jan 23 2011, Heb said:
ALS, the subject of this book is related to Lewy Body Dementia and PSP. These two diseases my parents had & are related to ALS. Jonathan Weiner (author) does an excellent job of keeping the reader interested. Stephen has ALS and his brother tries to find a cure. The reader will learn why research focuses or does not focus on some disease research. The complications ALS patients deal with are not dwelled on but are mentioned. This gives the reader who has dealt with other related diseases more of an understanding.

Modern Literature, Mysteries, and More!
We specialize in collectible, contemporary signed first editions. First edition means the first printing. (Later printings of the first edition are typically not printed on acid-free paper, and should be avoided by collectors.) Signatures are obtained by us in person. Inscribed books sold by us may contain a line, a phrase, or a sketch that the author has chosen to add. Our signed books are not dedicated to anybody in particular (not to your grandmother, your Aunt Gladys, your ex-lover or your former cellmate), except in the rare case of a presentation copy from an author to a noteworthy person. All our books are hardcover, unless the book is an Advance Reading Copy, Uncorrected Proof, or PBO. You can expect that the books we send you will be as described, and in a physical condition worthy of the author’s having signed them. We do not sell remainder-marked books, signed or otherwise
