A very scarce travel work by Emma Roberts, travelling across India, beautifully illustrated with one-hundred detailed plates. A very scarce first edition of this work.Complete as two volumes bound in one.Illustrated with an engraved title for each volume, a frontispiece and fifty plates to Volume I, and forty-eight plates to Volume II.Collated, complete. A touching travel work on India, looking at the beauty of the country, both its people and architecture. The author, Emma Roberts, wrote with compassion of the people of India and their culture, at a time when many similar travel works were written by men.Emma Roberts travelled to India alongside her sister and brother-in-law, living in Bengal and Calcutta.Dated from the engravings. Illustrated by Turner, Stanfield, Prout, Cattermole, Roberts, Allom, and more, from original sketches by Robert Elliot and George Francis White. In a full morocco binding. Externally, smart, with light rubbing to the boards, spine, and extremities. Spine is faded. Minor bumping to the extremities. Front hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and some spotting, mostly to the plates. Tidemark to the frontispiece and engraved title of Volume I, lighter tider marks to the rest of the plates. Engraved title for Volume I is detached but present . Title page and preface of Volume I are torn with a significant portion detached but present, some loss to the title, all of the preface leaf is present but is torn and detached. Good Only

Where are We?
Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
