About This Item

London: Printed for W. Davis, 1687. Very good in recent calf-backed green cloth with extra pages to add bulk, with paper flaw to text of leaf A3, small tears to a few pages.. First edition of the first separate published work by Matthew Prior. Both Montagu and Prior were the joint authors, but the contributions of each has been long debated. See MacDonald 241a; Legg, Matthew Prior. . ., pgs. 8-10 (1972 ed.). Published in the same year as Dryden's Hind and Panther, Prior "wrote a burlesque reply." The instant work pokes fun at Dryden's use of animals in allegory to debate theological differences between the Church of England and Church of Rome.

4to. [6], 28pp., without initial blank leaf. ESTC R14177. Wing P3511. MacDonald, Drydeniania, 241a.
