About This Item

New York: Abelard-Schuman Inc. [1956], 1956. First printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. 8vo. [4], v-xiv, 241, [1] pp. Maroon cloth with gold lettering on the spine. Price of $4.50 on the front flap of the dust jacket. Illustrated with several black and white photographs and a map. The story of an anthropologist's exploration of India west of the Subansiri river and his attempts to establish friendly relations with the tribespeople of the area. Haimendorf undertook his travels during the end of the Second World War. Rather than taking an armed escort, Haimendorf took his wife and professional collaborator to allay the suspicions of the native peoples. This strategy succeeded and Haimendorf learned a great deal about the local culture of this region, knowledge which he recounts in this book. A Near Fine book with minor toning to the pageblock in a Very Good dust jacket with a small closed tear to the front panel and a few traces of edge wear.
