London: Country Life Press, 1938. First edition. Boards. Illustrated boards in blue, black and brown. Very good. Ravilious, Eric. 102 pages. 23.3 x 15.3 cm. Wood engraved title vignette and twenty four color lithographed illustrations by Ravilious of English shop fronts most of them in London -- an infinite variety from an undertaker to a baker to an oyster bar. The Foreword and text by James Maude Richards, noted architectural writer. This classic rather fragile picture book printed by the Curwen Press was produced in a single run of 2000 copies, and printed later in facsimile (2008), as the plates were destroyed in World War II bombing raid. Ravilious died in 1942, when his aircraft was lost off the coast of Iceland on a search mission. Nicks to spine ends and corners.

Description:
London: V&A Publications, 2012. First Thus. 2nd Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Good Plus. First edition thus, second printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 23.5 × 15cm, 112pp. First published in 1938, this classic book introduces the British high street, pairing the timeless illustrations of Eric Ravilious with an engaging text by architectural historian J.M. Richards. Shops include the family butcher, the coach builder, the cheesemonger, the knife grinder and the oyster bar. Only 2000 copies of the original book were printed before the lithographic plates were destroyed in the London Blitz. As a result, it has become one of the most collectable of all artist's books from this period. This beautiful facsimile edition features Ravilious's illustrations in exquisite colour and includes an essay by V&A curator Gill Saunders placing the book and its history into context. Condition: The book is in excellent condition. The dustwrapper has a little edgewear but is now within a protective sleeve.
