About This Item
London: Smith Elder, 1884. xii and 288 pages. Frontispiece. Publisher's red cloth with palm tree in gold, spine faded. Misleadingly titled since 'Dishonest John' Colborne was invalided back to Cairo before the Kordofan expedition got under way. Still he was the only survivor of Hicks' staff. In later years he hung around Cairo scratching a living from journalism and was described by Wingate as 'looking like a second-rate Jupiter in reduced circumstances'.
