Clare Turlay Newberry (1903-1970) was the author of seventeen children's books.She was born in Enterprise,Oregon,and started drawing before she was two.By the age of six she had decided to become an illustrator.Newberry lived in New York and Taos,New Mexico,and often used her own cats and children as models for her work.Among her other enchanting books are 'Barkis',and 'Smudge'.During her lifetime, she received four Caldecott Book Honours.Over the years several of her books were also included amongst the Fifty Books of the Year,chosen by the American Institute of Graphic Art.
