First published 1931; this is the 1998, hardcover, First Edition, First Edition from Smithmark. Winner of the Caldecott Book Honors, this is the first book from Oregon-born, author-illustrator Clare Turlay Newberry (1903 - 1970); in 1930 the author attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris; the next year, to finance her passage back to the US, she published this work. Story of a little girl named Sally who receives a lion cub for her birthday she names Herbert. He's playful and loves to chase & pounce on people. When he grows in size, this behavior causes problems. The family lives in the city --- scared, relatives, friends & deliverymen (even the postman) avoid their house. What to do with a friendly lion? A zoo??!!!
