About This Item

[London]: [s.n.], [1704]. [2], 25pp, [1]. Recent cloth-backed marbled papers boards, contrasting black morocco lettering-piece to upper board. Slightest of rubbing to extremities. Marbled endpapers, remnants of contemporary marbled papers to front and rear blank fly-leaves, contemporary manuscript annotations/underlining to p.13, else internally clean and crisp. A rare survival of a printing of Queen Anne's commission for the continued construction of the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich, specifically the completion and furnishing of King Charles Court designed and overseen by Sir Christopher Wren. The primary text establishing the parameters of the responsibilities of the board of commissioners is appended by extracts from the numerous Parliamentary decrees relating to the founding and function of the hospital, including the 1694 An Act for the Increase and Encouragement of Seamen in which the establishment of the institution was initially proposed and the benefits to naval veterans made clear. ESTC records copies at just three locations in the British Isles (BL, Liverpool and Oxford), and a further two in North America (U.S. National Library of Medicine and North Carolina). ESTC T26836.. First edition. Quarto.

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
