Cracking to front hinge, with exposed netting. Some rub-marking and tanning to pastedowns and endpapers. Boards have moderate shelf wear, with rubbing and marking. Light bumping to corners and crushing to spine ends. Book has noticeable forward lean. Boards are slightly bowed with water marks overall.

Presumed first ed.--perhaps not first printing because gift inscription is dated Christmas 1921; 486 p., without writing within but occasion stains near fore-edge of some pages; name of former owner on rear end page; strong paper mildly age-toned; binding tender; in absence of d.j. the beige boards with yellow rose stamped image are lightly bumped at corners, somewhat rubbed at crown and foot of spine.

Condition is poor. The hardcover is worn, with the spine missing the top half. Inside the hardcover the book is gifted and dated Dec 25, 1923. The book remains readable. The problem with the book is the condition of the hardcover, binding and spine. Photos attached of all 3 deficiencies.

First edition. No dust jacket. Cover of pale green fabric printed with green text and green and yellow decoration on the front and spine, showing little wear, other than some darkening over the spine. The book leads off with a number of decorative pages, including the endpapers. There is a hinge split after the title page, as shown in photo #6. This is not uncommon. There is not a corresponding split in the rear. The rest of the pages are clean, tight and unmarked. Set in California, this book contains some of the descriptions of nature that Stratton-Porter is well known for. It also contains a heavy dose of anti-Asian racism, which she had not been previously known for. No illustrations other than the frontispiece. A fairly rare book.
