About This Item

London: L Reeve & Co.,, 1896 A good copy of the larger illustrated edition of Edwards Hemiptera-Homoptera with 2 black and white and 28 colour plates. In contemporary half leather binding which is in very clean sound condition with small raised bands and gilt titles to spine. There is some scuffing and slight surface loss at the spine ends and at the corners and the spine is slightly faded (the fading also extends to the top 2 cms of leather on the front board). Page edges and endpapers marbled. There is a pasted extract from a catalogue entry for the work on the verso of the fep together with the ownership stamp of George West (there is a further stamp in the gutter on the plain side of the rear free endpaper). George West was a keen entomologist (although employed as a lecturer in Botany), and made an extensive pencil note to the initial blank about the work. He also made some scholarly pencil annotation - sometimes cross referencing to other works including Donovan's British Insects. The contents are complete and clean but with considerable foxing - particularly at the beginning (to page 17) and end of the work - including the final plates (spotting at the edges from plate 23 - plate 28 very spotty), which were bound after the text. There is a small tag at the page edge of the first index page which was presumably to allow easy access to the plates which follow. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.

About E C Books

E C Books is a small online bookselling business, specialising in pre 20th century works:natural history, science, history, and travel, aiming for rarer and more unusual books. Our largest stock area is Natural History, where we have a good range of books from the 1700-1800's, many finely illustrated. Other areas include children's books, particularly late 1800's-early 1900's - again illustrated; and literature pre 1900.When you order books from us we ensure that they are properly packed to protect condition, and we always use recorded or 'signed for' postal services for more secure delivery. Please note that we have recently moved to the beautiful Orkney Islands, where we intend to open a bookshop over the next year. Because of our location we cannot guarantee 'next day' delivery but we will get your purchase to you as quickly and safely as we can. Please note that the buyer is responsible for the payment of any tax or duty on import.
