About This Item
London: L Reeve & Co.,, 1892 A very good copy of the large paper edition with 31 hand coloured plates and one plain plate in contemporary half morocco binding. Previously owned by George West, who was a botanist, keen entomologist, and author of Practical Principles of Plain Photomicrography (1916). The book has his stamp to the front pastedown and the gutter of the final blank. He annotated it in pencil frequently referencing to other works, and added a small tipped in drawing of Aepophilus bonnairei with location at p 145. The binding is sound and clean with gilt ruled raised bands, titles and decorations to spine. There is general rubbing to spine ends, joints and corners with some leather loss at the bottom corner tips. The cloth surface has some scuffing at the top of the front board and there is fading to the cloth at the side edge of the front board. Small pale spot at the bottom of the spine. Page edges lightly marbled and endpapers with decorative leaf design. Contents: half title; title; preface 2pp; text and index 1-350; publisher's list 2pp; plates at the rear each with a leaf of description = plates 1-31 hand coloured; plate 32 black and white. Contents are very clean and sound. Small piece of paper with catalogue entry for the work pasted to verso of fep. Verso of endpapers and initial and final blanks brown-toned. Some light spotting to initial and final leaves and the occasional spot elsewhere. Small tag added to side of p343 to give easy access to the index section.
