About This Item
London & New York: George Routledge & Sons. New Edition . Hardcover. Poor/No Jacket. This book is in poor -- but complete -- condition, needing restoration. The text block is detached from the covers, and the stitching is loose. The coloured frontispiece has come loose, and the binding shows wear and rubs at edges, with cloth missing from the top and bottom of the spine. There is a gift inscription on the front free end paper "May 17, 1977 -- Grandmother's book when she was a little girl". The original edition was published in 1853, but this is a later printing. A moralistic novel intended for young girls, it tells the story of Helen, an early or pre-teen girl, the problems her character faults (which seem minor to us) lead her into, and how she sees the error of her ways. To modern readers perhaps the most striking lesson of the book is how an adult -- like Aunt Eleanor, Helen's guardian -- can use guilt, skillfully applied and managed, to induce conformity and willing obedience.
