Binding of black quarter cloth w/gilt titles, gilt royal crest, and decoration; burgundy /cream designed paper-wrapped boards; clean and unmarked, tight and solid book. Light wear to corners and lower edges. Rough cut on fore edge and bottom edge. Seven illustrations-mostly of personages involved. Internals clean, free from any marks or creases, lightly toned. "The Heir of Douglas" brings a new solution to the old mystery of the Douglas Cause, a notorious 18th century scandal over the disputed birthright of Archie Douglas. Heir or imposter? If he was really the son of Lady Jane Douglas and Colonel John Stuart, he would be the heir to a vast fortune. Also, includes the secret history of Andrew Stuart and his detections in foreign parts. A dedication to Dr. Frederick A. Pottle, a friend of Doctor Boswell. There is an inscription from Johnson to Boswell, April 27, 1773 - printed in the book.
