About This Item

Edinburgh; University Press, 1964. Hardcover. Original Cloth. 8vo. VI, 316 pages. 23 cm. First edition. This volume studies the work of Hebrew novelists following the death of Abraham Mapu in 1867. These twenty years correspond with the last phase of the Hebrew movement of Enlightenment, the Haskalah. Compounded of fantasy and realism, primitive in structure and characterization, and concerned for the most part with conditions of contemporary Jewish life within the Jewish Pale of Settlement in Czarist Russia, these works shed much light on the development of modern Hebrew literature, as well as the social history of the era. The author, David Patterson (1922-2005) was the emeritus president of the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, and an emeritus fellow of St. Cross College, Oxford. Erratum slip inserted. Includes bibliographical references (p. [304]-308) and index. Subjects: Hebrew fiction - Russia - 19th century - History and criticism. Jews in literature. Hebrew fiction. Jews. Literature. Criticism, interpretation, etc. Very fresh and clean. Great condition in great jacket. An outstanding copy. (BIBLIOG-35-54).
