About This Item

Stamford, CT: Longmeadow Press, 1991. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Near fine. Includes several contributor signatures and is inscribed by co-editor Don Henley in the year of publication on the dedication page: "To Dave, Don Henley, Dec. '91." A previous seller billed the book as inscribed to Henley's co-editor Dave Marsh, however the inscription seems unceremonious from one co-editor to another and we have no other details of provenance. Additionally signed by Thomas McGuane, John Nichols (twice signed with inscriptions), and Jimmy Buffett (yes, the late legendary singer) at their contributions to this collection of testimony in the service of protecting Walden Pond.  A book chock-full of meaningful reflections on the pond (and of course, Thoreau) from famous musicians,  actors, authors, athletes, and politicians too numerous to list in full, but including folks like Jimmy Carter (foreword), Edward Kennedy, John Kerry, Tom Cruise, Ted Dansen, Sting, and Meryl Streep (you get the picture, but see photos of the table of contents). Henley is of course known as a founder of the rock band The Eagles, but he also founded the Walden Woods Project in 1990 to protect the pond and woods from development. He organized benefit concerts (Jimmy Buffett played at them), this book, and more to ultimate raise $22 million to purchase land and steward it. Map endpapers of the pond and vicinity; black and white photo portraits of each contributor. A very near fine book with a rear corner that is just slightly bumped; in a near fine jacket with a quarter-inch tear to front corner. A unique collection of signatures (especially Buffett), and perhaps an important association copy if inscribed to Dave Marsh.

About Rural Hours

Rural Hours (formerly Wood + River = Books, est. 2019) specializes in ecology, natural history, nature writing, the environment, environmental literature, and contemporary essay, with a special passion for association copies and notable inscriptions. We draw our name from the popular-but-then-forgotten book by Susan Fenimore Cooper (published in 1850), generally considered the first work of environmental creative nonfiction by a woman in the U.S. We are interested in challenging and expanding the canon of environmental literature and finding books that tell remarkable stories and illuminate the tradition of writing about place and natural history.
