Striking dust jacket art by Walter Ferro.. First printing. Rather uncommon first edition of this author's first novel, based on the history of the Valle Crucis mission in the mountains of North Carolina in the mid-nineteenth century, and of the struggles of the bishop who conceived it and the deacon who ran it. Linney wrote a play with the same title based on his novel, and in 2004, this novel was finally reissued in paperback. 311 pp.
