The local policeman, Sam Wood, checks the deserted railway station and finds a coloured man sitting reading a book with a wallet full of money. Sam laughs when the young man claims that he earned the money in California as a police officer! He has just met Virgil Tibbs, and he finds himself in the unusual position of having an African American police officer in charge of the investigation, in a bigoted southern town in the early 1960s.
