Pinkie Proudfoot is only a child, but to some people she seems to have this extraordinary gift, so they set up the Foundation of Harmony to help her make use of it. But to Barry Evans, a sixteen-year-old who had struck up an odd friendship with Pinkie when they were both still at school, it seems that the Foundation really exists to exploit Pinkie, and her gift, and the sick people who pay large fees to come there. When he learns what the foundation is doing to Pinkie, he decides that by hook or by crook he must get her out.
