About This Item

London: Methuen, 1936. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. First UK edition in First Issue dustwrapper. Publisher's stone-coloured boards with dark-green lettering to the spine. Boards exceptionally bright and clean. Faint offsetting to both sets of end-papers otherwise a near fine (or better) copy. The dustwrapper is price-clipped to the front flap but the top of the 7 of 7/6 is visible confirming its first issue status. The dustwrapper has a 4 mm slither of loss at the head of the spine and a tiny amount of loss to the corners (hardly worth mentioning). There area couple of very short, closed tears to the top edge of the front panel. Chicago crime beat journalist-turned-novelist Jonathan Latimer blends hardboiled detective fiction with a shot of screwball comedy in the fast-moving "Headed for a Hearse", an exciting combination of the macabre and the humorous starring William Crane a dipsomaniac detective, who somehow manages to solve some intriguing cases. This was an early "locked-room" mystery. Great cover art by C. W. B. (C W Bacon). Quite scarce. Photographs/scans available upon request.
