Hawkes Harbor had a very slow build up. I really wasn't impressed when I first started reading the story. It made sense, but it dragged on. I'm glad I stuck with it, though, because it really was an original take on the traditional vampire tale. If you take the time to get to the middle of the book, you will be rewarded. The pace picks up and everything falls into place. I can't give it more than three stars because the first half of the novel really dragged, for that I can't see giving it four stars. If I could rate he book as the first half and second half seperately, though, I'd give the first half two stars and the second half four stars. The characters were excelently crafted. The scenery was easy to visualize. I would recommend reading it, but warn you that it may be hard to get through the first half. Do it. You will be rewarded.
