Deluxe hardcover edition of this lavishly illustrated history of the islands, their traditions, cultures, & peoples, with text complemented by hundreds of full-color photographs. This Presentation Edition, numbered 10802, drawn from the first copies of the first printing, is bound in pure linen sailcloth over hand-beveled boards, with a spine of top-grain goatskin stamped in genuine gold foil. The cover illustration is an actual-size reproduction of a stylized sea urchin from a rare piece of ancient tapa cloth, while the slipcase (NOT PRESENT) & endpapers are reproductions of another piece of this cloth. Protected in a clear, stiff, thin acetate cover. 287 pages with notes on the photographs & map. Condition is Near Fine: completely clean & tight & square, pages white & unmarked. Slightly bumped corners, very mild yellowing at half title page where presentation notice is tipped in (photo 3), & a light scratch to front acetate cover are only flaws.
