Published by Ross-Hargreaves 1958, First printing, Library of Congress #: 58-46974, Soft bound, Mint- condition (Very light cover wear). This excellent book contains beautiful photographs of the flowers of Hawaii in their natural colors and natural settings. The book will be of special interest to the malihini (new comer) and the kamaaina (old timer). The flowers and flowering vines are arranged alphabetically, followed by the flowering trees in alphabetical order. Common and Latin names are given for each. Reference to specific locations where these blooms can be found at time of publication is given. Practically all Hawaiian flowers come from far away places around the world, and have their origin in far away places around the world, and were brought to the islands by early travelers, including the original Polynesian settlers. Twenty-four plants were believed to have been brought to the islands by the great double sailing canoes (like the present-day outrigger, but much larger). Among these were the coconut, breadfruit, banana, frangipani, orchid, bamboo, poinsettia, oleander, flame trumpet vine, bougainvillea, chenille plant, kukui (candlenut tree for oil from the nuts), hau (canoe outriggers were made from its curved branches), milo tree (for wooden poi bowls), paper mulberry (for tapa cloth), taro, sweet potatoes, yams, ti plant, sugar cane, wild ginger, and bottle gourds. The book is approximately 5 3/8 X 8 1/4 inches in size and contains 62 pages with over 100 color photographs. The cover sticker price is $3.50.
